FAQs About Our Pond Shop

  • I want to put in a pond next spring. What should I do now to prepare for it?

If you plan on building your own pond, get all your equipment as soon as possible so you don’t have to wait for it in the spring. Except for rock and stone, our pond kits include everything you’ll need.

If you’re hiring someone else to build your pond, get a quote and sign your contract ASAP. That way you’re not stuck on a waiting list in the spring. We do not build ponds, but we can direct you to some contractors when you call or stop by our shop.

  • Can I over-winter my fish?

Here in Wisconsin, you can over-winter your fish if the pond is at least 2-1/2 feet deep. However, you’ll need to keep a hole in the ice so gases from the pond can escape and oxygen can get into the water. Although a pond heater can be used for this, it is less effective and more costly than a diffuser.

  • Do I feed my fish in the winter?

Feed you fish only until the water temperature gets below 55 degrees. After that, fish metabolism will slow down so they can hibernate at the bottom of the pond. Food still in their intestines at that point can rot and make them sick.
